  1. Witwatersrand, or the Rand (Afrikaans `ridge
  2. of white water') the economic heartland of S
  3. Transvaal, South Africa. Its reef, which
  4. stretches nearly 100 km/62 mi, produces over
  5. half the world's gold. Gold was first found
  6. there in 1854. The chief city of the region
  7. is Johannesburg. Forming a watershed between
  8. the Vaal and the Olifant rivers, the Rand
  9. comprises a series of parallel ranges which
  10. extend 100 km/60 mi E-W and rise to
  11. 1,525-1,830 m/5,000-6,000 ft above sea level.
